Hot seat: Graduate consultant Matthew Owen talks about working in recruitment

Blog

Here Matthew Owen, one of our graduate consultants, talks about his career in the recruitment industry and with Cast UK to date. Matthew graduated from Lancaster University in 2015 with a degree in Business Studies and joined our Logistics and Transport team 6 months ago.
1. What attracted you most about a career in recruitment?
I think it was really the fast paced nature of the industry, as well as the financial benefits such as the uncapped commission. Also the entrepreneurial spirit and the chance to have a lot of autonomy in your role and be responsible for your own earnings.
2. How would you describe the beginning of your career in recruitment? What did you do in your first few weeks?
It’s been pretty intense! There’s a lot of training, learning both logistics as an industry as well as recruitment, but it’s been really good and everyone’s been really supportive. It’s been a case of getting to know colleagues and managers too.
3. What has been your biggest success in recruitment so far?
For me it’s been placing a number of candidates successfully in roles. Also, I was promoted within 5 months of being here and I won Cast UK’s award for best new comer in 2015.
4. How would you describe your working environment?
It’s great, the office here is very state-of-the-art and comfortable and there is a good atmosphere among colleagues, everyone gets along really well. There’s a lot of team building things like nights out, annual trips to the Chester Races which is great and all helps towards the atmosphere here.
5. What do you think makes a good recruitment consultant?
I think you need to be confident and very much a ‘people person’. Resilient as well, and a good entrepreneurial spirit to get things going really.
6. What is the most rewarding aspect of the job?
I think there is a lot of personal satisfaction from placing candidate in to their perfect role, and getting a lot of appreciation from them. Also the financial aspect, through the uncapped commission that we receive.
7. What advice would you give to any graduate considering a career in recruitment?
I think it’s definitely a good career choice, my advice would be to make sure that you research the business and make sure that the business culture really fits yourself.
8. Finally, what do you enjoy the most about working at Cast UK?
I think it’s very much the team really, everyone in the office gets on really well. There’s always a really good atmosphere between all the employees. Also the personal development aspect. Wayne, our managing director, is really big on progressing everyone through the business wherever possible and concentrating on your own self development. Cast UK are looking to double the size of our team in 2016.
