FTA joins with Everywoman to encourage more female freight workers

The freight industry has traditionally been seen as a male domain due to the need to operate heavy machinery, although the truth is that women are become increasingly prominent within the sector and are proving their worth as more-than-capable workers. In order to highlight this and to encourage more women to think about taking upcareers in logistics, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has teamed up with Everywoman, which is the top organisation looking after the interests of professional females across a number of trades. The sixth annual everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards are set to take place this month, and the deadline for nominations has now been extended by an extra week after it was announced that the FTA is to endorse the prize. As a result, the accolade will now be named the FTA everywoman in Transport and Logistics Award, with the deadline for nominations set to close on Monday 18th February. The winners will then be announced at a ceremony in London's Savoy Hotel on May 16th. Everywoman co-founder Max Benson commented: "Women make up nearly half of the UK workforce and yet only 25% of employees in the industry are female. Everywoman is committed to changing the image of the industry so that talented women recognise that their career ambitions can be realised in the transport and logistics industry." Categories for this year's awards will include the Driver of the Year Award, Director of the Year Award and Team Leader of the Year Award, all of which aim to recognise women who are currently excelling in each category. In addition, the Rising Star of the Year Award will honour one woman under the age of 30 who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry, while the Industry Champion of the Year Award will recognise a female worker who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to attract and retain other women within the transport and logistics sector.
