The middle of January; gloomy weather, a depleted bank balance, a couple of extra inches around the waistline and a bunch of New Year’s resolutions that you’ve already broken.
On top of all that, you might be embarking on another year in a job that you’re not happy in. Just around the corner is Monday 15th January, supposedly ‘Blue Monday’, believed to be the most depressing day of the year. Though you may be dubious about the science behind this day, it’s worth considering if the return to work is the reason behind your Monday blues. If that’s the case, then maybe it’s time to start thinking about something new... Here’s 6 ways you should know it’s time to look for your next career step: ‘Blue Mondays’ everyday First and foremost, does every day feel like ‘Blue Monday’? If so, that’s a good indication that something isn’t quite right at work. It’s normal to feel some January fatigue, but if you begin every working day filled with dread then it’s time to take action and kick start your job search. Stress and unhappiness A little bit of stress is normal, but if you find yourself waking in the middle of the night worrying about work or you’ve been calling in sick just to take some time out, this is a big warning sign. You’re not reaching your full potential Can’t see any opportunities for development? Your job shouldn’t be easy and you need challenging to stay interested. If you’ve become stagnant in your role and know you’ve got more to offer, then it’s time to look for something bigger. You aren’t being rewarding appropriately You’ve been working hard and proving your worth with positive results for the company but your pay still isn’t what it should be and you keep getting overlooked for a promotion. If your rewards aren’t consistent with your output, then it’s time to find a business that really values you. Monster boss Is your boss making your life a misery? Rather than supporting your development they’re overloading you with work, overlooking your achievements and undermining your confidence. Relationships at work are important and it’s unlikely you’ll get to where you want to be if you don’t see eye to eye with your manager. You’re disengaged Have you completely lost interest in the work you’re doing and the company you work for? Maybe your objectives have changed or the business isn’t what it used to be, there is nothing wrong with simply wanting a fresh challenge.
